A Short History of Dice: Five Thousand Years from Knucklebones to Liquid Cores
Pick up any modern DND dice set tonight — the sharp-edged resin piece with gold flake drifting through it, the metal d20 that lands like a verdict — and you are holding the newest link in one of the oldest unbroken chains in human culture. People were rolling for luck before they were writing, and arguably before they were building cities. The history of dice is not a niche corner of games trivia; it is a five-thousand-year story about probability, superstition, law, chemistry and craft, and it ends — for now — on factory floors like ours. This article walks the whole arc: from sheep ankle bones to Mesopotamian cubes, Roman gambling dens to medieval bans, celluloid to epoxy, math classrooms to the polyhedral dice boom, and finally to the liquid-core and gemstone pieces collectors hunt today. Along the way we will point out which ancient crafts still survive — because several of them clock in every morning at our factory in Dongguan.
1. Before the cube: the age of knucklebones
Long before anyone cut a cube, people threw bones — literally. The astragalus, a small squarish bone from the ankle of a sheep or goat, tumbles pleasingly and settles on one of four distinct faces, and archaeologists have found these knucklebones in ancient sites across the Mediterranean, the Near East and beyond, often polished smooth by generations of hands. The Greeks and Romans knew them well enough to give the four faces names and point values, and children's games with knucklebones survived essentially unchanged into living memory — the modern game of jacks is their direct descendant.
Two things make the astragalus a fascinating ancestor. First, it is not fair, and nobody minded. The four faces land with noticeably different frequencies because the bone is asymmetrical, so every throw carried its own folk mathematics: the rare faces scored high, the common faces scored low — an intuitive pricing of probability thousands of years before anyone formalised the concept. Second, it was never only a toy. Across many ancient cultures the same bones were instruments of divination, thrown to ask questions of gods, assign fates, divide property or select leaders. The line between gambling and prophecy stayed blurry for millennia; both are, after all, ways of asking the universe to make a decision on your behalf.
When people began to want a more regular throw, they did the obvious thing first: they copied the bone. Museum collections hold astragali replicated in bronze, glass, ivory and carved stone — manufactured knucklebones, which is to say the first custom dice. The material upgrade came before the shape upgrade, and that order of operations — keep the object, elevate the material — repeats throughout the history of dice, right up to the present day.
2. The first cubes: Indus Valley and Mesopotamia
The cube arrived surprisingly early, and in more than one place. Excavations in the Indus Valley — the Bronze Age civilisation spanning parts of modern Pakistan and northwest India — have produced terracotta cubes marked with pips that look startlingly familiar, broadly dated by archaeologists to somewhere around four to five thousand years ago. Mesopotamian sites have yielded cubic and pyramid-shaped throwing pieces from a similarly deep window of antiquity, including the elegant four-cornered casters associated with the famous royal race game excavated at Ur. Egypt, too, has produced dice-like objects alongside its board games. Scholars still debate who influenced whom, or whether the cube was simply invented independently wherever games needed an arbiter — it is, after all, the easiest regular solid to cut.
Why a cube at all? Because it solves the astragalus problem. Six identical square faces, each meeting its neighbours at identical angles, means every face has — in principle — an equal claim on the outcome. The cube converts a throw from an omen into an experiment: same object, same odds, every time. It is no exaggeration to call the six-sided die one of humanity's first precision instruments, a randomiser you could carry in a pouch.
What the early cubes did not yet agree on was numbering. Surviving examples vary: some arrange their pips so opposite faces sum to seven, others pair consecutive numbers, and some follow no system a modern eye can detect. Standardisation would take a few thousand years — and we will come back to it, because the convention that eventually won is still stamped into every dice set we ship.
3. Rome: dice towers, emperors and loaded dice
If one ancient culture deserves the title of dice-obsessed, it is Rome. Dice turn up across the Roman world in bone, ivory, bronze, amber, glass and stone. Dice towers — little architectural chutes that tumble the throw beyond any player's control — survive from antiquity, which tells you two things at once: that Romans loved dicing, and that Romans did not entirely trust each other. Gaming boards are scratched into the pavements of public buildings. Surviving accounts describe gambling as officially restricted for much of Roman history yet universally practised anyway, with festival seasons when the rules relaxed and the whole city rattled. More than one emperor is remembered — by ancient biographers who admittedly enjoyed gossip — as a devoted, even compulsive dice player.
Rome also gives us the first rich record of cheating. Archaeologists have recovered Roman dice that are plainly loaded — drilled and plugged with dense material — as well as examples shaved subtly out of true so that certain faces turn up more often than they should. Some crooked pieces were found discarded in rubbish deposits, presumably in a hurry. And a striking number of surviving Roman dice are simply, honestly irregular: lopsided enough that modern researchers who measure them report real biases, suggesting everyday makers cared less about geometric perfection than a modern player would assume. Fairness, it turns out, is not a property you inherit with the shape; it is a manufacturing standard someone has to choose to meet.
That tension — between the die as a symbol of blind chance and the die as a physical object somebody made well, badly or dishonestly — is the engine of the whole history of dice. Every later era answers it with the tools it has. Rome answered it with dice towers. We answer it with two-stage inspection and a photo report.
4. Medieval dice: taverns, hazard and the ban hammer
Medieval Europe inherited Rome's dice habit and its ambivalence, then amplified both. Dice were the perfect medieval pastime: cheap to make from bone or antler, small enough to hide in a fist, playable on a barrel top by candlelight. Games flourished — most famously hazard, a betting game of points and chances that surviving references trace through medieval taverns and that is commonly credited as the ancestor of modern craps. In some cities, dice makers were numerous enough to organise into guilds, which is as clear a signal as medieval economics can send that demand never slept.
Authority, meanwhile, spent centuries trying to stamp the habit out. Church moralists preached against dicing as a gateway to blasphemy, idleness and ruin. Kings and city councils issued bans and then re-issued them; soldiers on campaign were a favourite target, since men with pay, boredom and daggers made a combustible gambling demographic. The sheer repetition of these prohibitions is the historian's punchline: you do not need to ban something every generation unless every generation is doing it. Loaded and "false" dice recur in court records and popular storytelling alike, where the crooked-dice swindler became a stock villain.
It is worth pausing on why dice frightened authorities in a way chess never did. Dice were fast; they were democratic — a peasant's penny and a lord's shilling obeyed the same odds — and they let fortunes move without labour, which unsettled a world built on fixed station. The little cube was, quietly, a radical object. It still is. We just call it game night now.
5. The seven rule: how numbering became standard
Somewhere along this long road, the numbering wars ended. The convention that won — so completely that deviations now read as factory errors — is simple: opposite faces sum to seven. One backs six, two backs five, three backs four. Dice arranged this way appear in antiquity and gradually became the overwhelming norm, and the logic of the arrangement explains the victory. Pairing the highest face with the lowest balances the die numerically across every axis, so no hemisphere of the cube is "high" or "low". If a die is slightly imperfect — and every physical die is — the sevens rule keeps that imperfection from systematically favouring big numbers or small ones.
There is a subtlety even most gamers never notice: the sevens rule does not fully determine the layout. Once one-six, two-five and three-four occupy opposite faces, the three pairs can still wrap the cube in two mirror-image ways — a right-handed and a left-handed die. Both are "correct"; Western dice overwhelmingly follow one handedness, and spotting a die of the opposite chirality in a bowl is a party trick for manufacturing nerds. The pip patterns themselves — the quincunx five, the diagonal three — settled into forms so recognisable that they now work as a tiny global pictographic language.
The same balancing logic carried forward when dice grew more faces. On a standard d20 the numbering places opposite faces so they sum to twenty-one, and a well-made polyhedral dice set applies the equivalent rule to every shape in the family. Four millennia of trial and error, compressed into a detail you can check in ten seconds.
6. Celluloid to polymer: the materials revolution
For most of the history of dice, material meant whatever nature handed over: bone, antler, ivory, wood, stone, with metal or glass for the wealthy. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries broke that ceiling. Celluloid — commonly credited as the first commercially successful plastic, developed in the later nineteenth century partly in the search for an ivory substitute — could be dyed any colour, formed into crisp shapes and polished to a shine no bone could hold. Dice, billiard balls, piano keys and gaming chips all migrated to the new material within a generation.
Celluloid's reign ended the way early industrial chemistry often did: dramatically. The material is notoriously unstable — flammable when new and prone, over the decades, to a slow chemical breakdown that vintage collectors know on sight, in which old pieces crystallise, craze and finally crumble in the display case. Successor plastics arrived through the early and middle twentieth century, and one of them, cellulose acetate, became the quiet aristocrat of the family: casino "precision" dice are typically machined from acetate-type stock to tight tolerances, with sharp square edges, transparent bodies that make loading visible, and pips drilled out and back-filled with material of matched density so that every face weighs the same.
The casino die and the game-night die then went their separate ways. Mass-market dice embraced injection-moulded thermoplastics — cheap, consistent, endlessly colourable — while epoxy and polyester resins later opened the door to something plastic had never really been: individual. A poured resin die is a small casting, and anything you can suspend in a clear casting — a pigment swirl, a shimmer of metallic powder, a flower — becomes part of the die forever. That single property sets up the entire modern era, and the rest of this article lives inside it.
7. The 1970s: Platonic solids reach the game table
The shapes that define modern gaming are far older than the games. The five convex regular solids — tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron — were catalogued by Greek geometers well over two thousand years ago and are commonly known as the Platonic solids, after the philosopher whose school made them famous. The icosahedron was not invented for the d20: ancient twenty-sided objects sit in museum collections, some faced with letters or symbols, their exact use still debated. For centuries these shapes lived mostly in geometry texts and, eventually, in school supply catalogues, where polyhedral models and teaching dice helped students grasp solids and probability.
Then, in the mid-1970s, tabletop role-playing arrived — and it needed exactly what the mathematicians had been sitting on. A game about open-ended adventure demands more granular randomness than a d6 can offer: percentages, twenty-sided attack rolls, eight-sided damage. Early role-playing publishers famously pointed players toward low-cost polyhedral teaching dice, and the first generation of gamers remembers soft plastic sets whose edges rounded visibly with use, their engraved numerals inked in by hand with a wax crayon. Almost overnight the Platonic solids jumped from the math classroom to the kitchen table, and the phrase DND dice entered everyday speech as the name of a seven-piece polyhedral family: d4, d6, d8, two d10s, d12 and d20.
The d10 earns its footnote here: it is not a Platonic solid at all but a pentagonal trapezohedron, adopted because a pair of them rolls clean percentages. Purists grumbled; percentile dice won. By the 1980s the polyhedral dice set was an icon you could identify in silhouette, and the d20 in particular had begun its climb toward what it is today — the unofficial logo of an entire hobby.
8. The collector era: the inside of the die becomes the product
If the 1970s made polyhedral dice a tool, the last fifteen years have made them a craft object. Crowdfunding and maker culture pulled dice out of pure mass production and into small-batch artistry, and today's collector market runs on techniques that would have read as science fiction to a first-edition player.
Sharp edge resin dice are the signature of the era: hand-poured epoxy, faces sanded dead flat, edges left crisp as cut glass rather than tumbled round — a casino aesthetic applied to DND dice at the cost of hand labour on every piece. Mica powder and glitter gave resin its shimmer vocabulary, from soft colour-shift hazes to full galaxy skies. Liquid core dice seal a separate capsule of fluid inside the resin so that suspended glitter drifts and snows inside the die for years — a pour-within-a-pour that doubles the ways a casting can fail and produces the most hypnotic dice ever made. Hand-inclusion dice entomb real objects — dried flowers, tiny skulls, miniature dragons — turning a dice set into a cabinet of curiosities. And metal dice matured into whole plating families over die-cast zinc alloy: antique bronze and copper for gravitas, mirror chrome, satin black, and iridescent rainbow finishes that shift colour as the die turns.
The through-line of the collector era is interiority. Ancient and medieval dice were surfaces: the material was the material, and only the marks mattered. A modern resin die is a window, and the value sits inside it. That is a genuinely new idea in the history of dice — and it is why dice manufacturing has had to become part lapidary art, part chemistry lab.

9. Five thousand years on one factory floor
Here is the part of the story we can verify personally. At the gemstone dice benches, artisans grind dice from solid amethyst, agate and jasper blanks. No mold exists or can exist for stone, so every face is ground, faceted and engraved by hand — exactly as ancient lapidaries shaped hardstone amulets and the earliest luxury gaming pieces. It is the oldest craft in the building and the one five thousand years have changed least. The metal line answers Rome: molten zinc alloy is die-cast under pressure on three machines, seam-polished, plated and hand-filled with baked enamel — a compressed, modernised descendant of every bronze caster who ever poured a gaming piece, with electroplating standing in for the patina of centuries. The wood shop machines and finishes hardwood dice a medieval turner would recognise at a glance. The acrylic line is the twentieth century distilled: injection molding, repeatable to the gram, the economic backbone of bulk DND dice sets. And the resin benches are the collector era in person — hand-poured epoxy, mica, capsules and inclusions, hand-sanded flat and sharp.

10. Where dice design goes next
Five thousand years of history point somewhere. Reading our order book rather than tea leaves, three directions stand out.
Dice are becoming display objects. Oversize single dice — 33mm and 50mm d20s, chunky d100s — now sell as centrepieces, gifts and shelf trophies as much as gaming tools. Buyers increasingly commission one hero die rather than a full polyhedral dice set, and a 50mm resin d20 with a dragon-eye core is closer to a paperweight-sized artwork than to anything a medieval gambler would have called equipment. The die as jewellery, the die as sculpture: the luck-object has become an ornament again, which is arguably where it started.
Interiors keep getting more ambitious — and the market has decided the cost is worth it. Liquid cores and hand-placed inclusions are the hardest castings we do. A capsule or flower must sit centred, bubble-free and undistorted inside crystal-clear resin, and in honest factory arithmetic that means a casting reject rate of roughly 20 to 30 percent on these designs. We plan for it the unglamorous way: every inclusion run is over-poured so that the quantity surviving inspection matches the quantity on the order. The alternative is shipping the failures, and the entire history of dice is one long warning about what players do to makers they stop trusting.
Dice are becoming identity objects. The fastest-growing request in custom dice is not a new material at all — it is personalisation. A guild's crest replacing the twenty. A company logo on the six. A signature colourway matched to a brand or a campaign.
