Glow, Mica and Cracked: The Dice Effects Catalogue

Two dice can share the same shape, the same weight and the same numerals and still live in different worlds, because what a buyer falls for is rarely the geometry — it is the effect. The shimmer that moves when the die turns, the glow that survives the lights going out, the fracture lines that catch paint, the sculpted scales under a thumb. Over years of casting and pouring we have settled on six signature effects that come up in nearly every custom brief: mica glitter, cracked, glow-in-the-dark, hollow, dragon-scale and skull. This is the catalogue from the factory side — how each effect is actually made, which materials it suits, and how to put one into production without paying for tooling you do not need.

1. Why a factory keeps an effects catalogue

An effects catalogue exists for the same reason a kitchen keeps a menu: the dishes on it are the ones the kitchen has cooked a thousand times. Every effect in this article runs on processes and tooling we operate daily at YSDICE — die-cast zinc alloy on three machines, hand-poured sharp-edge epoxy, rounded resin and liquid core, and injection acrylic. That maturity is what makes an effect orderable rather than experimental. The pricing is predictable, the failure modes are known, and a sample can be in your hands in days instead of weeks of trial pours.

It also protects buyers from a quiet trap. An effect that looks effortless on a finished die — an even glow, a crack that reads as stone rather than damage — usually hides a long tuning process behind it. Ordering from a proven catalogue means that tuning already happened on someone else's schedule, not on your deposit.

There is a commercial logic too. Effects are how one geometry becomes many products. A single D20 mold can ship as a plain body, a cracked colourway, a mica-loaded shimmer edition and a glow variant, each aimed at a different buyer, without a single new tool being cut. For a brand building a range, the effects catalogue is a multiplier: one design decision, four or five distinct listings on the shelf.

2. Glow-in-the-dark: light you charge

Glow dice work on photoluminescent pigment: particles that absorb light while the die sits under a lamp or daylight, then release it slowly as a visible glow once the room goes dark. The pigment is mixed into the body material itself — it is not a coating — so the glow cannot chip or wear off, and it recharges indefinitely. In our line-up glow belongs to the translucent materials: injection acrylic (where Glow in Dark is a standing category) and resin pours, because the body has to let stored light back out.

The design decisions matter more than buyers expect. A heavily tinted body will mute the glow; pale and translucent bases let it breathe. And a die that reads beautifully at midnight still has to look good at noon, which is where numeral contrast and body colour earn their keep.

Glow also plays well with restraint. A full-body glow die is the classic, but the effect can be confined — a glow swirl through a clear body, glow concentrated in one colour band of a two-tone pour — so that under normal light the set looks sophisticated rather than novelty, and the reveal only happens when the lights drop. Those layered treatments cost nothing extra in tooling; they are mixing decisions, made at the recipe stage and locked in for every run that follows.

Design rules for a glow set that works

  • Keep body tints pale or translucent — deep opaque colour smothers the glow
  • Plan the daylight look separately; the die spends most of its life charged, not glowing
  • Choose numeral enamel that contrasts in both lit and dark states
  • Photograph both states for your listing — the glow shot sells, the daylight shot converts

3. Mica and glitter: the shimmer family

Mica is a natural mineral that splits into microscopically thin, light-catching plates; coated and milled, it becomes the pigment behind almost every shimmer, pearl and colour-shift finish in the dice world. Suspended in a resin pour it swirls into galaxy nebulae; loaded into acrylic it gives glitter and pearly-marble bodies; and on the metal side, our mica glitter treatments give a cast zinc-alloy set a sparkle that reads as depth rather than surface decoration.

The craft variable in shimmer work is suspension. Glitter is heavier than the medium it floats in, so timing and viscosity decide whether flake spreads evenly through the die or settles into a sad stripe at the bottom of one face. It is the classic example of an effect that looks trivial and is not.

4. Cracked: the controlled fracture

The cracked effect turns damage into design. On metal DND dice, fracture lines are sculpted into the master so every casting carries a web of crevices across its faces; plating and contrast enamel then do the dramatic work, with the recessed cracks holding a darker or brighter tone than the raised surface. The result reads as obsidian, dried earth or dragonhide depending on the colourway — one geometry, many personalities, which is exactly why Cracked Dice earn a standing category in our metal range.

The same instinct exists in stone: crackle-glass gemstone dice are carved from glass that has been thermally fractured internally, so the cracks live inside a smooth polished body and catch light from every angle. Two routes, one lesson — a fracture placed on purpose reads as luxury, not damage.

5. Hollow, dragon scale and skull: sculpture in zinc alloy

The last three effects are pure metalwork, and they are the reason die-casting earns its keep. Hollow dice are cast as openwork shells — a lattice of dragons or filigree where a solid body would be — so a large die lands light, rings faintly when it settles, and shows daylight straight through its faces. It is the most conversation-starting object we make, and the hardest to cast cleanly, because a lattice leaves the mold nowhere to hide.

Skull dice go the other way, sculpting the memento-mori deep into each face and letting enamel fills pick the sockets and grins out of the metal. All three run through the same finishing line as our plain metal sets: die-cast zinc alloy, then any of twelve electroplated finishes, plated fresh to the order rather than pulled from a shelf.

6. Matching effect to material

Not every effect suits every material, and forcing a mismatch is how budgets get wasted. Glow needs a body that transmits light, so it lives in acrylic and resin and is pointless in solid metal. Sculptural relief needs a material that holds a crisp edge through thousands of castings, which is why hollow, dragon-scale and skull are zinc-alloy territory. Mica is the diplomat — it works nearly everywhere. The table below is the short version of the conversation we have with every new effects brief.

Effects also combine, and the combinations are where a set starts to feel authored rather than picked from a shelf. Mica shimmer inside a glow body gives a set two personalities — sparkle by day, ember by night. A cracked metal geometry takes on a completely different character depending on which of the twelve plated finishes goes over it and which enamel sits in the recesses. 7. Ordering an effect without a tooling bill

Here is the part most buyers overestimate: putting an effect into production rarely requires new tooling. Every effect above already exists on proven stock molds, so light customisation — your colours, your logo laser-engraved, your numeral enamel — carries no tooling fee and starts from just 10 sets. That is a real route to market for a small brand: a cracked set in your palette, a glow set with your mark on the D20, in the hands of your community for a first drop.

A fully original sculpt is the second step, not the first. When your own dragon or crest needs its own geometry, a new steel mold runs $600–$2,000 one-time — refunded back as your reorder volume accumulates — with the mold cut in 20–25 days. Either way, samples come fast: 3–5 days for custom work, or within a week on stock designs with the sample cost refunded on your first order. And before anything is mixed or cast, you will see a free 3D design of every face within three days of sending your idea.

Timelines for the production run follow the material, not the effect. Once samples are approved, mass production takes 10–30 days depending on the line: sharp-edge resin runs 15–20 days, metal 20–25, acrylic 20–25 and rounded resin 25–30. An effect never adds a separate queue of its own, because the glow pigment, mica load or cracked geometry is part of the same pour or casting the plain version would use — which is exactly why ordering from the catalogue keeps delivery dates honest.

Budget tip: launch your first effect run on stock molds — 10-set minimum, no tooling fee — and let sales data tell you which effect deserves its own custom mold. The mold fee you eventually pay is refunded against reorders anyway.

8. How we test an effect before it ships

An effect adds a failure mode to the die that carries it, so each one earns its own check on top of the standard line inspection. Glow sets are charge-tested: sample dice sit under a standard lamp for a fixed interval, then go into a dark box, and the checker confirms the glow is even across faces and consistent across the sampled pieces. Patchy pigment dispersion shows up here, long before a customer's midnight photo would find it. Mica and glitter bodies are inspected in motion rather than at rest, because suspension faults hide in stills: the die is turned through a full rotation under a moving light, and the shimmer has to travel with it — no dead face where flake settled during cure, no stripe betraying a pour that sat too long.

Metal effects get the metal checks. Cracked, dragon-scale and skull castings are examined for crisp recess detail before plating, because plating brightens a surface but cannot restore an edge that came out of the mold soft. Hollow lattices are inspected strut by strut for complete fill — an openwork shell has no thick section to hide a casting flaw in. Enamel fills across every effect are checked for full coverage and a clean line where colour meets recess edge.

All of it rolls up into the same discipline the rest of the factory runs on: the second inspection before dispatch, a photo report before anything is boxed, and SGS material documentation when your sales channel requires it. 9. What each effect does to the price

Effects move the unit price far less than most buyers fear, and — on stock molds — they never touch the tooling line at all. Glow and mica are recipe effects: the cost is the pigment load and a little extra care in mixing, which lands as a small materials delta per die rather than a new line item. That is why a glow or shimmer variant of an existing body is usually the cheapest possible way to add a "new" product to a range: same mold, same process, different recipe.

The genuine price movers are the sculptural metal effects, and not because of the sculpt itself. Hollow's openwork slows the casting cycle and raises the reject rate, and both of those costs live in the unit price; deep-relief skull faces ask for more enamel passes and more masking time at the fill bench; heavy recess detail of any kind adds polishing and inspection minutes that a smooth-faced die never needs. As a rough ladder from least to most expensive: acrylic glow and glitter at the bottom, resin shimmer and cracked-metal colourways in the middle, hollow lattice work at the top. 10. Three effect-led launches, from the order book

The seasonal glow drop. A European retailer runs a glow-in-the-dark acrylic set as an October seasonal every year. The maths is all calendar: 20–25 days of acrylic production plus shipping means the purchase order lands with us in July, stock arrives in September, and the listing goes live when the nights draw in. Same mold as their year-round range; only the recipe and the timing change.

The crowdfunding flagship. A Kickstarter creator built a campaign around a hollow dragon D20 as the hero image, with plain metal sets carrying the volume tiers underneath it. The hollow piece did what halo products do — it earned the shares and the press — while the standard sets, cast on the same machines, did the fulfilment-friendly heavy lifting. We prototyped the hero first so the campaign photography was of a real casting, not a render.

The private-label shimmer range. An Etsy brand took mica-glitter resin in three colourways, 10 sets each on stock molds, logo engraved on every D20, no tooling fee. Total exposure: a few hundred dollars and one round of samples. Two colourways reordered, one did not — which is precisely the point of starting at the 10-set minimum. YSDICE sees this pattern weekly, and the brands that scale are almost always the ones that let a small first run make the catalogue decisions for them.

11. Briefing mistakes to avoid

A short list from the wrong side of the inbox — the briefs that cost their owners a sample round or a season.

  • Briefing by adjective. "Make it magical" gives the effects bench nothing to tune toward. Send reference photos — competitor sets, gemstones, nail art, anything — and say what you like about each.
  • Putting glow in a deep opaque body. The pigment charges, but the body swallows the light. Pale and translucent bases, always; we will flag it at the 3D-proof stage, but it is cheaper to know now.
  • Judging shimmer from stills. A photo shows one lucky angle. Ask for video of the sample turning in the hand — suspension quality only shows in motion, which is also how we inspect it.
  • Launching every effect at once. Six effects times three colourways is eighteen SKUs of risk. Start with two or three at the 10-set minimum and let sell-through pick the range.
  • Forgetting the daylight look. A glow die spends most of its life charged and lit. If it only looks good in the dark, it only sells once.
  • Choosing plating and enamel separately. On cracked and sculpted metal, the finish and the recess colour are one decision, not two — a combination that reads as obsidian under antique bronze can read as mud under bright silver. Brief them together.
